Conc. h2so4 act as dehydrating agent(removes water molecule from ethanol) and also act as a catalyst in the reaction of converting ethanol to ethane.

ethanol is dehydrated to ethane by heating ethanol with excess with excess of conc. h2so4 at 170 degree c
