The function of cranium is to house and protect the brain. Other 14 bones form the face and are called facial bones. All the bones of the skull except the lower jaw bone form a rigid structure.

In the human brain, the cerebrum is the uppermost region of the central nervous system. The prosencephalon is the embryonicstructure from which the cerebrum develops prenatally. In mammals, the dorsaltelencephalon, or pallium, develops into the cerebral cortex, and the ventral telencephalon, or subpallium, becomes the basal ganglia. The cerebrum is also divided into approximately symmetric left and right cerebral hemispheres.
