what is the role of hilum and micropyle in a seed

On some seed coats, the opening in the integuments of the ovule, called micropyle is visible.



The hilum is usually visible also, the scar left by the stalk which attached the seed to the placenta.

It appears dark in color when the seed becomes physiologically mature and is thus used as an indicator of seed maturity.

The helium is attached to the stalk while the micropilum is opening next to the helium which help in in the transfer of male gametes from the anther to the ovule.



The function of micropyle is that it absorbs the water at the time of germination and also the root of the plant emerges out from it
