The Era of Responsibility is that emerging new world vision whereby the concern is not just for the survival of the people but also the planet. It takes a holistic view of the foundational element of human existence. It signals a new way of thinking where the environmental problem does not necessarily indicate our demise but constitutes itself as our passport for the future. The era ushered in a holistic and ecological view, looking at the world as an integrated whole rather than a collection of disparate elements. Industry played an important part in this shift due to its chief concern being resources and how to use them in a sustainable manner. The role of industry in the society has been considered to be crucial because of the role it has to play in the Era of Responsibility. A shift in focus has been attributed to the shared view of the Chairman of Du Pont, Mr Edgar S. Woolard who declared himself to be the company's 'Chief Environmental Officer.' He had commented that the continued existence of the company as leading manufacturers necessitated that they excel in environmental performance. Sustainable development and utilization of resources would be more effective if industry supports this economic model.
