What is the role of iodine in refining of titanium?

Iodine is heated with Titanium to form a volatile compound which on further heating decomposes to give pure Titanium.

Ti (Impure) + 2I2 + Heat → TiI4

TiI4 + Heat → Ti (Impure) + 2I2
