Although it has disadvantages of rusting but if it is maintained properly then it could be the successful material to use.For instance I would like to share the details of famous iron bridge in Delhi that was constructed by Britishers and still it is there without any structural damage.I guess the design was very conservative but it proved to be better material as it survived more than 150 years.
Iron was preferred at earlier time now the technology has changed a lot with new research in materials.I am not aware of all of them but one of the material is steel which can be modified according to need and exposure conditions.
