Stomach mucus protects the gastrointestinal cells from the damage that gastric juices can cause. ...Stomach acid comes from the parietal cells, a type of stomach cell, and it is a hydrochloric acid, which is a solution of water and hydrogen chloride. This allows the environment in the stomachto be highly acidic.

To protect the stomach from being digested by it’s own acid. Stomach fluids contain hydrochloric acid or HCL, a very strong substance which could burn a hole in your hand if you poured a little in it. The role of that acid is to help start digestion by changing the structure of proteins in the diet and to change some minerals to a more absorbable form. It also kills most bacteria, helping control our bacterial flora.
