The term hindbrain refers to the oldest portion of our brain, which is composed of the brainstem (made up of the pons and the medulla oblongata) and the cerebellum. Each of these structures plays a major role in coordinating and controlling the vital automated systems of our body.

NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students

Components of Hind brain:

1. Cerebellum:

 The cerebellum is the second largest part of the brain.

 The superficial layer of cerebellum, called the cerebellar cortex consists of gray mater.

 Deep to gray matter are tracts of white mater called arbor vitae (= tree of life) that resemble branches of a tree.

 Main functions of cerebellum are to:

• Coordinate skilled movements like dancing, skating, typing etc.

• Maintain posture and balance.

Note: In human, cerebellum is well developed to maintain erect posture.

2. Pons varolli serves as a neuronal link between cerebral cortex, cerebellum, medulla oblongata and spinal cord.

3. Medulla oblongata:

 Medulla contains various centers (nuclei) that govern several autonomic functions.

 Cardio–vascular center regulate rate and force of heart beat and diameter of blood vessels.

 Respiratory center regulates breathing.

 Various reflex centers control reflexes for vomiting, coughing, sneezing, salivation, swallowing and peristalsis etc.

 Medulla is connected to the spinal cord.
