The ‘small pea-sized gland’ known as pituitary situated at the base of the hypothalamus plays a major role during puberty. The pituitary is activated by the gonadotropin releasing hormone secreted by the hypothalamus.

Explanation:

This stimulates the pituitary to release two other hormones:

i) Follicle stimulating hormone: Promotes the development of ‘ovarian follicles’ in females and spermatocytes in the males.

ii) Luteinizing hormone: Triggers ovulation and the formation of ‘corpus luteum’ in females. Stimulates ‘Leydig cells’ to produce testosterone in males.
