In the Criminal Justice System the police play the role of investigating the case in the initial stage. The most important function of the police is to investigate any complaint that is reported in their station. ... The police do not have the authority to decide whether a person is guilty or innocent.

WHEN ANY CRIME IS COMMITED THE POLICE REGISTERS A F.I.R AND STARTS ITS INVESTIGATION.
IN THE PROCESS OF INVESTIGATION THE POLICE VISITS THE PLACE OF CRIME , TALK TO EYE WITNESS AND RECORDS WHAT THE EYE WITNESS SAY.
ON THE BASIS OF INVESTIGATION THEY DECIDE WHETHER THE ACCUSED IS GUILTY OR NOT.
IF THE ACCUSED THE GUILTY THEN THE POLICE REGISTERS A CHARGE SHEET IN THE MAGISTRATES COURT.
