hiii mate....
the cartilaginous rings in the trachea serves to hold the airway open so that oxygen can be breathed in with a minimum of effort by diaphragm. if these u - shaped structures -- they are not complete rings . -- weren't there , the airway would collapse , and oxygen would not reach the alvioli deep in the lungs , along with the u shaped , the semi rigid nature of cartilage provides this support of the airway while allowing for flexibility and movement of the respiratory tract during inspiration (expansion ) and expiration (contraction) .
