The split ring in the electric motor also known as a commutator reverses the direction of current flowing through the coil after every half rotation of the coil. Due to this the coil continues to rotate in the same direction.

The split rings are generaly used in the DC generator. Their main aim is to polarize the current as one side positive and the other part with negative charge. Thus a DC could be collected at the slip rings using carbon brushes.
