Tartaric acid is found in cream of tartar, which is used in making candies and frostings for cakes. Tartaric acidis also used in baking powder where it serves as the source of acid that reacts with sodium bicarbonate(baking soda).Tartaric acid is added to neutralise the sodium carbonate formed on heating by the decomposition of NaHCO3. If it is not added, the cake would taste bitter due to the presence of sodium carbonate in it.
