Villi increase the surface area of the small intestine for faster and better absorption of digested food molecules through the wall of the small intestine into the blood and the lymph by diffusion (or active transport).

These tiny, finger-like projections are lined with epithelial cells containing microscopic protrusions called microvilli, which greatly enhance the absorptive area of the epithelial cells.
