The surface is the outside of anything. The earth, a basketball, and even your body have a surface. A surface is the top layer of something. Sandpaper has a rough surface; a balloon has a smooth but rubbery surface. When we use the word surface, it usually means there is a lot of stuff underneath.
Subsurface Events. Convection and Plate Tectonics - Convection is heat transfer by mass motion of a fluid such as air or water when the heated fluid is caused to move away from the source of heat, carrying energy with it. Convection above a hot surface occurs because hot air expands, becomes less dense, and rises.
