Religious significance. Diwali is celebratedby Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Newar Buddhists, although for each faith it marks different historical events and stories, but nonetheless the festival represents the same symbolic victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

The signifience of DIWALI festival is to mark good over evil. This festival is celebrated after the 20 days of dussera. As we know,rama killed ravana ..it took 20 days to return to Ayodhya. They lived 14 years in Forest only. Hope this helps uh :)
