The smooth endoplasmic reticulum has many functions in the in the liver as follows:
1) Detoxification:Perhaps the most important is the role of processing drugs and poisons making them available in the liver cells' cytosol for excretion. These toxins are then detoxified and expelled into the blood and the excreted through urine after filtration from the kidney.
2)The SER are reponsible for the production of many important biochemical compounds necessary for digestion.
3) Lipid digestion and phospholipid formation.
