A composite number is a positive integer which has more than 2 factors.

Negative numbers are typically not thought of as being composite, so we can eliminate that whole part of the number line.

0 is neither prime nor composite. The same is true for 1.

2 is prime, since its factors are 1 and 2.

3 is also prime, since its factors are 1 and 3.

Ergo, the smallest composite number is 4, whose factors are 1, 2, and 4.
