Given :- In a system designed to work out the tax to be paid :

An employee has £4000 of salary tax-free.

The next £1500 is taxed at 10%.

The next £28000 after that is taxed at 22%.

Any further amount is taxed at 40%.

To the nearest whole pound, which of these groups of numbers fall into three DIFFERENT equivalence classes ?

1) £4000; £5000; £5500

2) £32001; £34000; £36500

3) £28000; £28001; £32001

4) £4000; £4200; £5600

Solution :-

→ Tax free = upto £4000 .

so,

→ £0 to £4000 = Tax free .

then,

  • first class =£0 to £4000.

now, The next £1500 is taxed at 10%.

So,

→ £4000 + £1500 is taxed at = 10%

→ from £4001 to £5500 is taxed at = 10% .

then,

  • second class = £4001 to £5500 .

now, The next £28000 is taxed at 22%.

So,

→ £5500 + £28000 is taxed at = 22%

→ from £5501 to £33500 is taxed at = 22% .

then,

  • Third class = £5501 to £33500 .

now, Any further amount is taxed at 40%.

So,

→ £33500 above is taxed at = 40%

then,

  • fourth class = greater than £33501 .

now, we know that,

  • Boundary value is just below or just above the extreme edges of input data .

therefore,

→ valid boundary value is = 33501.

now, we have to check all options , and select the values which fall in three different classes .

1) £4000; £5000; £5500

  • £4000 = first class
  • £5500 and £5500 = second class .

Values are not in three different classes .

2) £32001; £34000; £36500

  • £32001 = Third class
  • £34000 = Third class
  • £36500 = fourth class .

Values are not in three different classes .

3) £28000; £28001; £32001

  • £28000 = Third class
  • £28001 = Third class
  • £32001 = Third class .

Values are not in three different classes .

4) £4000; £4200; £5600

  • £4000 = First class
  • £4200 = Second class
  • £5600 = Third class .

All three values are in three different classes .

Hence, Option (4) is correct answer.
