The √32, when written in radical form is 4√2. This is an example of finding the square root of an imperfect square without using a calculator.
There are five prime numbers (all 2's!) as factors. Now, we change the problem and rewrite the √32 as √(2 ∗ 2 ∗ 2 ∗ 2 ∗ 2).
Now we can simplify:
√(2 ∗ 2) = 2 This ''2'' will leave the radical as we already took the square root. We have 2 pairs of these. If you do not see how this is possible, take a look at this quick example:
√(4 ∗ 4) is the same as 2 ∗ 2 which equals 4!
Our new, simplified expression is 2 ∗ 2 √2 which equals 4 √2.
