The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a large, dynamic structure that serves many roles in the cell including calcium storage, protein synthesis and lipid metabolism. The diverse functions of the ER are performed by distinct domains; consisting of tubules, sheets and the nuclear envelope.

- The endoplasmic reticulum is a large network of membrane bound tubes and sheets.
- It looks like long tubules or round or oblong bags. The ER membrane is similar in structure to the plasma membrane.
There are two types of endoplasmic reticulum :
- Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)
- Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER)
RER looks rough under a microscope because it has particles called ribosomes attached to its surface.
SER look smooth under a microscope because it doesn't have particles called ribosomes attached to its surface.
