Sclerenchyma cells possess two types of cell walls: primary and secondary walls.

Structure of Sclerenchyma :

  1. These cells are dead cells and do not have protoplasm.
  2. They are long, narrow, thick and lignified cells.
  3. The cell wall is thickened due to lignin that hardens it. They have pointed ends. The may be from 1 mm - 550 mm in length in different plants.
  4. The cells are so thick that the cell cavity or lumen is lost or is absent.
