Subsistence crisis is basically changes in the economic factors for example higher prices which are usually caused by either natural or man-made factors. In the context of French Revolution this problem raised in the 18th century the population of France rose from 23 million to 28 million. There was higher demand and it was difficult to synchronize the demand with the production. The price of products increased with no increment in the wages which increased the gap in rich and poor.

Subsistence crisis: the Rising population and less grain production resulted in demand supply gap. So the basic need are endangered.

Two reasons were:

The population of France raise considerably from 1715 to 1789
Due to the droughts, hail and other causes the production was lowered.
