When the whole country was glued to the news for updates on the Trump, Clinton elections in the USA, our Prime Minister did something that efficiently snatched all the attention to himself. He banned all the denominations of five hundred and one thousand. It began on the 8th of November and ended on the 30th of December giving all of us a figurative heart attack.
The prime minster claimed that he was doing this to stop the black currency circulation that was happening in India and weather the decision had its desired effect is debatable. Then the Prime Minster released new notes of two thousand and five hundred. The two thousand notes were huge and getting change was no less than a headache. Due to this many small scale shops were forced to shut down and there were kilometer long queues in banks and ATMs. People wanted the new denominations in exchange for the old ones.
The decision had several short term effects that were not so pleasant. Weather the long term effects were good can be told only by time. We can only hope for the best.
