The Sun is a huge, glowing sphere of hot gas. Most of this gas is hydrogen (about 70%) and helium (about 28%). Carbon, nitrogen and oxygen make up 1.5% and the other 0.5% ismade up of small amounts of many other elements such as neon, iron, silicon, magnesium and sulfur.

Hydrogen makes up 72% of the mass of the sun, helium another 26%, and the remaining 2% is made up of oxygen, neon, nitrogen, carbon, magnesium, silicon, and iron. All of these elements come from the core of the sun where the temperature is approximately 27 million degrees F. This extreme temperature helps create an extreme pressure in the core which pushes the elements to the surface.
