First formal democratic government at village level.  

Chairperson of this unit is called "Sarpanch".

General unit of local self-government.  

Gram panchayat is a cabinet of the village elders directly nominated by the adult citizens of village.  

There are 8 - 10 ward punches, two/three coopted members who makes the body of Gram Panchayat and they  consists of 8 - 10 villages.  

Members of Gram Panchayats has tenure of five years and they directly are nominated from wards though the Sarpanch is nominated by the members.  

A provision for storing of seats for women and for SC and ST.  

Gram Sabha for each panchayat where Sarpanch conduct Gram Sabha meetings at once in six months.  

Sarpanch is required to arrange meeting of the members of Panchayat once in a month.
