The lithosphere of the earth is divided into a small number of plates which float on and travel independently over the mantle and much of the earth's seismic activity occurs at the boundaries of these plates.

Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer shell is divided into several platesthat glide over the mantle, the rocky inner layer above the core. The plates act like a hard and rigid shell compared to Earth's mantle.

it is the theory wich explains the formation of physical features on the earth according to this theory the crust of the earth has been formed out of seven major and minor plates the stress of the plates results in the building up of stresses within the plates and the continental rocks above leading to folding ; faulting and volcanic activity
