When a light is incident from denser to rarer medium , the ray deviates away from the normal. For a certain angle of incidence(i=ic)the angle of reflection becomes 90 degrees. This angle of incidence is called critical angle. Any ray with incident angle greater than its critical angle will be completely reflected back to the denser medium. This phenomenon is called Total Internal Reflection.

Two essential conditions for internal reflection :

Incident ray should travel in denser medium and Reflected ray should travel in rarer medium

The angle of incidence(i) should be grater than the critical angle for the pair of media in contact
