Radhakrishnan served as the head of the Indian mission to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) from 1946 to 1952, and was elected chairman of the UNESCO executive board in 1948–49. He was India's ambassador to the Soviet Union from 1949 until 1952. He was chosen vice president upon his return to India in 1952, and then president on May 11, 1962, replacing Rajendra Prasad, the first president of independent India. Five years later, Radhakrishnan stepped out from politics.
Indian Philosophy, 2 vols. (1923–27), The Philosophy of the Upanishads (1924), An Idealist View of Life (1932), Eastern Religions and Western Thought (1939), and East and West: Some Reflections are among Radhakrishnan's literary works (1955). He attempted to translate Indian ideas for Westerners in his lectures and books.
