Both are used, basically to refefer accompaniment, however one cannot be replaced with the other, like 1.the horse trotted along at a steady pace. Here, along cannot be with along with. Now consider this.2. A walked on the beach along with my sister. Sk it all depends on the requirment of the sentence.

we use along with sort of implies a dependance on the two objects n along means onwards or forwards  or going side by side
