Common salt is mainly added to the neat soap after the saponification reaction when the soap is washed with NaCl or brine solution in order to separate glycerin.

It is mainly added for precipitation to separate it from the aqueous solution. Salt is also used in order to separate glycerol from the water.

In manufacturing of soap, along with many raw materials like NaOH vegetable oil common salt is used due to common ion effect decreases the solubility of soap in water.
