Oxide ions tend to have a 2- charge. Fe3O4 is a neutral molecule,
so that means that the overall charge balance is 3(Fe) + 4(-2) = 0,
which gives the iron in Fe3O4 an overall valency of +8/3.
As we know that :-
In a molecule of the compound Fe3O4 there are three ions , two having 3+ valency whereas one ion having 2+ valency.
But here we do not take the average of these valencies i.e 8/3. Instead we keep them separate. The compound being ionic, the ions separate out.
