HEY !! HERE IS YOUR ANSWER ....

Oxide ions tend to have a 2- charge. Fe3O4 is a neutral molecule,

so that means that the overall charge balance is 3(Fe) + 4(-2) = 0,

which gives the iron in Fe3O4 an overall valency of +8/3.

As we know that :-

In a molecule of the compound Fe3O4 there are three ions , two having 3+ valency whereas one ion having 2+ valency.

But here we do not take the average of these valencies i.e 8/3. Instead we keep them separate. The compound being ionic, the ions separate out.

THANKS.
