If the given points A(2,1,) B(p,-1) and C(-1,3) are collinear, the the area formed by these points will be 0.
Area of triangle = (½) [ x1( y2 – y3) + x2( y3 – y1) + x3( y1– y2) ] = 0
⇒ (½) [ 2( -1 – 3) + p( 3 – 1) + (-1)( 1 +1) ] = 0
⇒ – 8 + 3p – p – 2 = 0
⇒ 2p = 10 ∴ p = 5.
