The poet speaks about his feelings of hospitality in this poem. He sees a snake come to his water trough to drink water. Usually, people are afraid of snakes and would try to kill the snake if they see one. The poet also has learnt that a snake should be killed as soon as it is seen. But his virtue of hospitality gets over him and he does not do anything to harm the snake. In fact, he allows the snake to drink water at his trough till it is content. Only when the snake is about to go back to its hole, the poet tries to throw a log at it to kill it. When the log misses the snake, the poet is relieved as he did not really want to kill the snake. He wanted to be a good host and let the snake go back to its hole without harming it.
