What the tennis court oath?

Finding themselves locked out of their usual meeting hall at Versailles on June 20 and thinking that the king was forcing them to disband, they moved to a nearby indoor tennis court(salle du jeu de paume). There they took an oath never to separate until a written constitution had been established for France.

On 20 june 1789, the member of French Third Estate who had begun to call themselves the National Assembly took the tennis court oath vowing " not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require ,until the constitution of the kingdom established ". It was a pivotal event in French Revolution.
