As a boy , Mandela thought in the beginning that as long as he was free to run in the fields near his mother's hut, swim in the clear stream that flowed through his village, roast mealies under the open sky, ride bulls etc. He was not slave to anybody.

As a student, Mandela wanted freedom only for himself. He thought as long
as he was able to stay out at night, read what he liked and go where he wanted, he was free.

Mandela, later in Johannesburg understood that all those above mentioned freedom are illusion. He and his community was not allowed to enjoy the basic and honourable freedom in reality. His people were not allowed to enjoy the real freedom like achieving their potential , earning their livelihood, marrying and having a family on their own.
