MORE than six decades ago, in Grade 1, I was doing math HW. There was a question on the HW sheet that baffled me, and asking my mom and older brother did not help either, because they were baffled at the question themselves. The question asked: how many cherries are there in fifteen cherries? After much anxiety, agony and hesitation, I opted for “a dozen and a fourth” (with a little nudge from mom). The next day, our teacher (I remember her name till today “Jeanette Success”) was heartily laughing at my “out-of-the-box” answer. She said “Victor, you are so imaginative. The answer they wanted was 15!” It seems the question was very basic: making you write numerals for words. There I was, being “out-of-the-box”. The reason why I still remember Ms. Success, is because she not only awarded me a ten on the assignment, she also gave me a bonus point for creativity.
