Strangely enough, part of what sparked the popularity of baseball was gambling, and the same can be true to an extent with football today. It was a sport during the 19th century where owners of companies would have their employees play against other company teams, and the owners would bet on the games. Companies would then hire ringers, and eventually this lead to it becoming a professional sport, to keep things honest, so to speak........
