Thermal decomposition is a chemical reaction where a single substance breaks into two or more simple substances when heated. The reaction is usually endothermic because heat is required to break the bonds present in the substance.

For ex-

CaCO3 → CaO + CO2

♦ Simply 'Thermal' means 'Heat'.

♦ Therefore, it is caused due to heat.

♦ In this reaction, the single substance breaks into two or more simpler substances.

♦Since, it is caused due to heat, therefore, we have to give heat to occur this reaction, and hence, it is an endothermic reaction.

♦ This reaction proceeds with the breakage of bonds among the elements of the componds.

♦ Its general form is :-

AB ––––> A + B

♦ Example :-

✔️ Breakdown of WATER into HYDROGEN and OXYGEN.

✔️ The balanced reaction is given by :-

\bold{2H_2O}———> \bold{2H_2+ O_2}
