Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in shape area and volume in a response to a change in temperature through heat transfer. Temperature is monotony function of the average molecular kinetic energy of a substance. When a substance is heated, the kinetic energy of its molecules increases.

Thermal expansion is the expansion in a solid by the mean of change in temperature . As the change in temperature takes place, the energy of the solid changed that is kinetic energy of the molecules either increases or decreases. This change in the vibration of the molecules causes the linear, areal or superficial expansion of the solid known as thermal expansion.
