Sometimes, the metal in middle of the reactivity series , is obtained from its ore by adding metal high up in the reactivity series to it . This reaction occurs through displacement reaction. Here, the metal with high reactivity displaces the metal with low reactivity. The metal is obtained in the molten form because this reaction is highly exothermic. Thus , as this reaction is exothermic, this is also known as thermite reaction.

For example::-

Fe₂O₃ (s) + Al (s) → Al₂O₃ (s) + Fe (l)

Use ::-

This reaction is used to join railway tracks.

Formation of ionic compounds::

Ionic compounds are formed by transfer of electrons from a metal to a non metal.

For example::-

MgCl₂ and NaCl

For the formation of these compounds , refer to the following diagram::-
