The thermit reaction is the reaction of metal oxide with aluminium.The aluminium acts as a reducing element and the reaction is highly exothermic and hence called a thermite reaction.The aluminium reduces the oxide of another metal.Most of the it is Iron Oxide.The reaction can be shown as-

Fe2o3+Al=Fe+Al2O3

The reaction of iron (III) oxide with aluminium to produce aluminium oxide and ferrous . Which is known as Thermite reaction . which is used to join the railway tracks which is known as thermite wielding  . The aluminium acts as reducing agent . Chemical equation given below shows the reaction =

Fe2O3 + 2Al ------------> 2Fe + Al2O3 + heat
this reaction is also called exothermic reaction because large amount of heat energy is elaborated.

Hope this helps .
