it means that

Half life of an element (usually radioactive) is that time period in which the mass of the element taken reduces to half..due to alpha, beta, gamma decay.
For eg. if you take 20g of Fr, then in 21 minutes only 10g will remain..further after 21 minutes more, 5 g remains and so on.
