what is title of Passage 10?
In all democratic countries people are the real masters and the governments are the functionaries of the policies made out by the public. The legislatures reflect the will of the people and the administration carries out what is passed as laws of the land. Hence, all power is ultimately derived from the public. In a country like the United Kingdom the Prime Minister cannot remain in power if the public opinion goes against him. It is a country which still retains the institution of Kingship. But the King or the Queen is absolutely powerless before the Prime Minister, and the latter derives his power from the public. So, is the case with the President of the United States or of France. They cannot remain as heads of the state if they lose the confidence of the people. The masses in all democratic countries are politically conscious. They express their opinion on all matters of importance concerning their motherland. The men at the helm of affairs have therefore, to be cautious to follow the will of the people. The newspapers wield an influence in the modem times as they never did before. They are no longer the suppliers of information alone, but they mold the national policies. (a) What is the role of the people in a democratic country? (b) How do. s legislature reflect the will of the people? (c) Why is the prime minister of U.K. more powerful than the queen or king? (d) What does the writer mean by political consciousness of the masses? (e) Suggest a title for the passage? (f) What change has come in the function of newspapers in the modern world?
