Basically, the "Trachea" can be defined as the continuation of the "Larynx".
The following are the characteristics of "Trachea" :-
- The "Trachea" is also known as the "Wind pipe".
- The "Trachea" is a tube like structure.
- The "Trachea" of an average adult human being is approximately 10 cm (centimeters) long and 2.5 cm (centimeters) in diameter.
- The "Trachea" lies mainly in the median plane, anterior to the "Oesophagus".
- The "Trachea" is supported by incomplete (C-shaped) rings of "Hyaline Cartilage".
- The cartilages are incomplete posteriorly and even when there is no air, the "Trachea" does not collapse due to the cartilaginous rings.
- The mucosa layer in the "Trachea" is lined with "Ciliated Pseudostratified Epithelium".
- The "Ciliated Pseudostratified Epithelium" in the "Trachea" contains mucus secreting "Goblet cells".
- The "Ciliated Pseudostratified Epithelium" helps in pushing the mucus out.
