Transverse binary fission:

Takes place in ciliates such as paramecium. The cytoplasm separate transversely between two pair of nuclei, forming two unrelated individuals. This is called bacterial fission. When the level of cytoplasmic division overlaps with the transverse axis of the character, the fission is called transverse binary fission. Example: Paramecium, Planar.

When the plane of cytoplasmic division coincides with the transverse axis of the individual, then this type of binary fission is called transverse fission.

Example: Paramoecium, Planaria

When the plane of cytoplasmic division coincides with the longitudinal axis of the individual, the fission is called longitudinal binary fission.

Example: Euglena
