Transverse waves are always characterized by particle motion being perpendicular to wave motion. A longitudinal wave is a wave in which particles of the medium move in a direction parallel to the direction that the wave moves.

Answer:

Transverse Waves : In this type of wave the particles of the medium vibrate in a  direction perpendicular to the direction of propogation of the wave. For example: waves produced in a stretched string.

Longtitudinal Waves :  These are the waves in which the particles of the medium vibrate along the direction of propogation of the wave. For example: sound wave.
