What is trinomial nomenclature?

\displaystyle\huge\pink{\underline{\underline{Answer :-}}}

Trinomial nomenclature refers to names for taxa below the rank of species. Using three words for a name is called Trinomial system of Nomenclature. For e.g Corvus splendens splendens (Indian crow), Brassica oleracea capitata (cabbage).

This is different for animals and plants:

  • For animals its trinomen. There is only one rank allowed below the rank of species: subspecies.
  • For plants see ternary name. There is an indeterminate number of infra specific ranks allowed below the level of species: subspecies is the highest ranked of these.

Extra Information

Trinomial nomenclature is employed to name the subspecies. In classification, the subspecies is a category below the species.

➜ Trinomial nomenclature was proposed by Lamarck. It means three part description first is genus then second is species and third is subspecies.
