triple point. The temperature and pressure at which a substance can exist in equilibrium in the liquid, solid, and gaseous states. The triple pointof pure water is at 0.01°C (273.16K, 32.01°F) and4.58 mm (611.2Pa) of mercury and is used to calibrate thermometers.

What is triple point?

It is the temperature at which all the three states i.e, solids, liquids and vapour states co-exists.

TRIPLE POINT OF WATER

The diagram (phase diagram of water) shows P-T plane divided into three regions, i.e., solid region, liquid region and vapour region which are selected by sublimation curve, fusion curve and vaporization curve. There three curves represent the states in which solid and vapour phases, solid and liquid phases and liquid and vapour phases co-exist.

The temperature and pressure at which these three curves co-exist simultaneously is known as triple point of water.

The value of triple point of water is 0.01°C.

Example: The triple point for water is represented by the temperature 273.16 K and pressure 6.11 × 10^-3Pa.

Note: Refer the diagram which is given in the attachment.
