Answers
The huge sea waves are called as a tsunami. They are caused by an earthquake, underwater landslide or any volcanic eruptions in the sea in the consequence of which huge waves are formed which causes flooding in the seacoast and loss of life and property.
EXPLANATION:
- The word Tsunami is made up of two Japanese words ‘TSU’ meaning harbour and ‘Nami’ meaning waves, so the word literally means harbour waves which are caused due to any earthquakes under the sea, or some major landslides under the sea or any underwater volcanic eruptions. The sudden release of large amounts of energy causes a ripple effect on the seawater.
- As these ripples or waves reach near the coast they start growing huge and powerful. These waves reach the coastline they cause extreme flooding in these areas which causes large scale destruction of life and property. These are caused within short period and hence are difficult to predict and monitor and hence the destruction is widespread.
